Executive Function Coaching

Take control of learning and life.

What is executive functioning?

“Executive functions” are mental processes that help us plan, focus on, and achieve our goals. We use these skills all the time to manage the different and competing complexities of daily life. Underdeveloped executive functioning often makes it hard for people to organize their thoughts and environments, focus, follow instructions, stay on task, adapt to new and unexpected circumstances, and regulate emotions.

Who benefits most from an executive function coach?

Most people could improve their study skills and habits. However, students who have executive functioning trouble often show persistent difficulties in one or more of the following areas:

  • Starting homework or other tasks

  • Following directions

  • Prioritizing

  • Working productively for longer periods of time

  • Switching tasks

  • Remembering what they’ve recently read or heard

  • Managing time and planning for deadlines

  • Organizing schoolwork

  • Turning in assignments

  • Organizing thoughts

  • Regulating anxiety

  • Staying calm when confronted by unexpected challenges

  • Keeping track of belongings

How do we help?

Though many frustrated students with executive functioning difficulties think they are just “wired that way,” these deficits can be improved with coaching. At Chronos Prep, we use a teaching method, known as explicit strategy instruction, that focuses not on what a student learns, but how. Our students learn different strategies to absorb, retain, and demonstrate knowledge – skills they’ll use for a lifetime.

“Thanks so much for helping me through this process! You always had confidence in me when I didn’t have it in myself, so thank you for that. I learned to become a better student and person.”

— Sarah Jane R., high school junior from Oakland, CA
